Pope John Paul II gave us the gift of the Luminous Mysteries (Mysteries of Light). It was no coincident that he used these particular parts of the Bible to be used as Mysteries of Light. This sinful world needs a bright light to wake up to the fact that not everything is "alright". Many Catholics are asleep and need to be woken up to the fact that if we do not change, and start to live our Catholic Faith, there might not be any faith left to be passed on to the next generation. You cannot pass on what you do not have yourself!
The first Mystery points out that Baptism is one of the most important Sacraments. Baptism is the first Sacrament to be received, because before receiving any of the other Sacraments, we must be members of the Church; and it is by receiving Baptism that we become members of the Church. Jesus Christ said to Nicodemus: "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of God." (John 3:5.) How many parents today neglect to have their children baptized? No Baptism, no Holy Communion! "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His Blood, you shall not have life in you" (John 6-48) In Holy Communion we receive the Life that Jesus is talking about, a share in His Divine Life.
In the second Mystery the Pope brings forward the holiness of Marriage. By entering into Marriage we enter into holy ground, we become partners with the Holy Trinity. By the intimacy of the marriage act we become pro-creators with the Creator and work with Him in bringing forth new life. Today, this has now become the "Culture of Death" through contraception, sterilization, abortion. The institution of Marriage is attacked through same-sex unions, fornication, adultery, pornography, co-habitation, divorce. But Our Savior tells us: "What God has joined together, let no man put asunder." He declared that no man, nor any legislation made by man, can validly dissolve the marriage contract, because it is a bond till death, that has been ratified by God Himself. Between one man and one woman. The whole of society depends on the family. If the family is corrupt, the whole of society is like a river that is poisoned at its source.
The third Mystery tells us that we have a serious obligations to pass on our faith. As parents we are the first educators of our children and it is a moral duty to instruct them, as their age allows. This is done firstly by our example. Don't expect your children to pray if you don't. Don't expect them to go to Mass if you don't. Don't expect them to practice virtue if you don't. And don't expect them to enter the Kingdom of God if you do not tell them how to get there.
The fourth Mystery shows us the Transfiguration. To transform our lives to a life of holiness. "Be Holy as your Heavenly Father is Holy!" This takes an action of the will 'I want to be holy, I want to be a saint." Heaven is full of people who did this, by wanting to be a saint, they became saints. At some point in their lives, this is what they said, "I want to be a saint!"
They were people just like us, with faults and failings. They also had to struggle, resist temptation. They had to guard their eyes, ears and tongue just like we do, and give up many things for the Kingdom of God.
The fifth Mystery: The Institution of the Holy Eucharist. Without It we can do nothing! To be able to do what we ought to do, can only be achieved through the Holy Eucharist. In Mass, God gives us all the graces and help necessary for our state in life. On one condition, that we really participate in Mass. Just being there is not enough. At Mass we are really at the foot of the Cross at Calvary with the Blessed Virgin. Time has been pushed aside, and it is not the year 2012, but the year of the death of Our Lord. We can not see this with our physical eyes, but with the eyes of faith. How do we know this is true? Because God tells us that this is so.
As we can see, these Mysteries are for our time. With the family under attack by same-sex marriages, homosexual agendas, by TV, and the Media. By materialism, individualism, where "I" come first, by immodesty in dress and speech. Especially by immodest dress. (Our lady of Fatima predicted in 1917, that there would come a time that God would be very much offended by the way people dress, and surely that time has come) Wrong is always wrong, even if everyone is doing it. Right is always right, even if no one is doing it.
Inform your conscience, learn your faith, so that you know the difference between right and wrong, for it is very easy for the devil to deceive an un-informed conscience. He goes around like a roaring lion, searching to see who he can deceive. Ask for the protection of Saint Michael the Archangel, the defender of the Faith.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the hour of battle,
Be our safe-guard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God restrain him, we humbly pray,
And do thou O Prince of the Heavenly Host
By the power of God, cast into hell
Satan and all the other evil spirits who wonder through the world
Seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
