During World War 11, a group of soldiers who had been on a long patrol, arrived in a small town. The next day being Sunday, some of the men went to Church. While waiting for the Service to begin, one young soldier, a private, produced a deck of cards and spread them out in front of him. Some of the locals were scandalized and brought it to the attention of the Sergeant. The Sergeant snapped: "Soldier, put away those cards."
After the Service was over, the private was put under arrest for playing cards in Church, and taken before the Commanding Officer. When told of the charge the C.O. said: "I hope you have an explanation. If you haven't you'll be in trouble. What do you have to say for yourself?"
The soldier said: "Sir, I've just been on a long patrol. I had no Bible or prayer book, but I had these cards. You see Sir, when I look at the Ace, it reminds me that there is but one God.
When I see the deuce, it reminds me that the Bible is divided into two parts, the Old and New Testaments.
When I see the three, I think of the Trinity, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
When I see the four, it reminds me of the four disciples who wrote the Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The five reminds me of the five wise virgins who trimmed their lamps and were well prepared - five were wise and were saved, five were foolish and were shut out.
When I see the six, it reminds me that in six days God created the heavens and the earth; and the seven brings to mind that on the seventh day He rested.
When I see the eight, I think of the eight righteous persons God saved when He destroyed the earth - Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives.
